Driver History
Fernando first got himself noticed in 1994, when he won the Spanish
Karting Championship.
Staying in the same series, the young Spaniard went on to become
Spanish Kart Champion again in 1996 and 1997, as well as World Kart
Champion in 1996.
In 1998, Alonso competed in the European Kart Championship, finishing
second.
It was 2000 which really got Fernando noticed however, when he
finished fourth in the F3000 championship, after taking an impressive
victory at Spa.
After testing for Minardi and Benetton, rumours about the Spaniard's
future gathered pace until he was finally signed to Minardi to compete
in the 2001 championship.
Fernando had little trouble outpacing 2001 Minardi team-mates Tarso
Marques and Alex Yoong, but at the end of the season had no race
drive for 2002.
Manager Briatore swapped Fernando with Benetton/Renault test driver
Mark Webber in 2002. Webber went to Minardi while Alonso helped
develop the Renault R202.
The key moment for the Spaniard came when he tested a Jaguar at
Silverstone and was immediately faster than current Jaguar driver
Pedro de la Rosa. Though Niki Lauda wanted to sign him up, Briatore
had bigger plans for Fernando.
