History

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit makes its Formula One debut as host this year, the first U.S Grand Prix since 1991 in Phoenix which was quoted by Martin Blundell as being “the biggest disaster ever.” In a country where sport is dominated by football, basketball and the like, nobody knew where it was, and as a consequence only a small number of spectators attended.

However, Indianapolis Speedway officials believe that this track will attract up to 150,000 spectators. This circuit has a long spanning history, attracting thousands of American fans every week, which is why the IMS believe that this is the perfect venue to attract Americans to Formula One.

The Indianapolis track is in the record books for holding the oldest automobile race in America, which opened in 1909 and became host to the Indianapolis 500 in 1911, the latest winner being Kenny Brack in 1999.

Former World champion, Jacques Villeneuve is no stranger to the Indy car circuit, having won the Indy 500 and PPG Cup in 1995. However, Formula One stars with high profiles such as Villeneuve will provide something of a culture shock to the American fans, with wages higher than some American football stars and team annual budgets peaking at $100 million. Speedway will have to work very hard to attract the same glamour that is attached to other F1 circuits.
